Poster: Independence Festival 1999
About
The Independence Festivals were annual national events from 1997 to 2001 celebrating disabled people’s lives and culture. The first 3 were held in Manchester, followed by Birmingham in 2000 and Leeds in 2001. The festivals in Manchester were held in Albert Square and the Town Hall. They were made up of an outside daytime event with a stage for performance, market stalls for organisations and workshops, followed by an indoors evening performance.

This postcard is one of a set of four designed by Brian Hilton and produced for the Independence Festival held in Manchester in 1997.
Image Description
The postcard is landscape A6 size with a lilac background.

In the early 2000s, a group of disabled lesbian and bisexual women regularly met in Manchester.
They gained funding in 2002 to run workshops looking at the experiences of disabled lesbians and bisexual women. From these workshops a set of 4 postcards was created.

International Day of Disabled People Birmingham poster, 2004

This poster is publicising an event celebrating International Day of Disabled People (IDDP) in Birmingham in 2004. The International Day of Disabled People is on 3 December every year. It's official name is the United Nations Day of People with Disabilities.
The poster was donated by Tom Commerford.
